Inside Eternity: Mike Lannen — Leading with Heart, Vision and a Dash of LEGO

Welcome to the very first post in our Inside Eternity series — a behind-the-scenes look at the people who make our work possible.

This isn’t just about job titles or project lists. We created this series to share the creativity, quirks and values that shape how we show up for our clients and for each other.

We believe the people you work with matter just as much as the work itself. By sharing the stories, passions and perspectives of our team, you’ll see exactly how those qualities shape the results we deliver for you.

Every month, we’ll spotlight a different member of the Eternity crew — what inspires them, how they think and the unique perspective they bring to the team. And it only makes sense to start with our founder, Mike Lannen, whose leadership style has been a driving force behind Eternity’s culture for more than two decades!

Mike is equal parts strategic thinker, creative problem solver and hands-on builder — whether that’s shaping a thriving company culture or snapping together an epic LEGO creation with his daughters. That same patience, attention to detail and joy in building something piece by piece is exactly how he approaches leadership at Eternity.

Why Emotional Intelligence is the Glue

For Mike, emotional intelligence (EQ) isn’t a “nice to have” — it’s the glue that holds Eternity’s creative crew together.

“In small, creative teams, collaboration isn’t just ideal; it’s oxygen,” he explains. “Without emotional intelligence, collaboration gets replaced by competition and confusion. And that’s how great ideas die.”

As a neurodivergent leader with AuDHD and anxiety, Mike has learned that being open about challenges creates a ripple effect. “You can’t give empathy you haven’t offered yourself first,” he says. “Drop the armor, and people will respond.”

Navigating the Storms with Empathy

One of Mike’s clearest examples of EQ in action came during the early days of the pandemic. When a long-time client called to pause their contract indefinitely, his first reaction was panic — until he realized their fears mirrored his own. Instead of pushing back, Mike leaned in, offering pro bono guidance to stabilize their digital strategy.

The result? The client returned stronger, more loyal and even referred new business to Eternity.

“Put people first, and the profits will follow,” Mike says.

Creating a Culture of Safety and Trust

So, what makes people feel safe and supported at Eternity? For Mike, it’s three things:

  1. Permission to Be Human — Transparency beats perfection.

  2. Trust and Autonomy — Creativity thrives without micromanagement.

  3. Genuine Listening — People feel valued when they’re truly heard.

This approach turns “workplace safety” from a policy into a lived culture.

Leading Because of — Not in Spite of — Neurodivergence

Mike doesn’t view his neurodivergence as an obstacle. Instead, it’s a leadership superpower that drives transparency, adaptability and deep empathy.

“My ADHD brain thrives on flexibility and chasing unexpected ideas,” he says. “Sometimes brilliance emerges from that mess.”

Vulnerability unlocks deeper trust than polished confidence ever will.

The Power of Radical Honesty

If there’s one piece of advice Mike wishes more leaders embraced, it’s this: “Vulnerability unlocks deeper trust than polished confidence ever will. Teams don’t follow perfection — they follow authenticity.”

What EQ-Driven Success Feels Like

For Mike, real success isn’t just about hitting revenue goals — it’s when creativity, skills, and passion click into place naturally. That kind of alignment shows up for clients too: projects run smoother, ideas flow faster, and the final result is stronger.

“It’s knowing we grew as people first, and as a company second.”
