New Findings Show Google Organic Clicks Shifting to Paid

It’s always been usual practice to emphasize more of your SEO resources towards generating organic traffic for your website, instead of paid traffic. It made sense since organic search links were attracting 70% of the clicks.

But it may be time to move away from the usual, into something new. According to new findings, Google organic clicks are shifting to paid—at least as far as eCommerce queries are concerned. You can read all about it at MOZ.

Where that trend went

It didn't reverse. Paid placements and Google-owned modules kept claiming space at the top of the results page, and the first traditional organic listing kept sliding further down. Shopping units, local packs, and featured snippets pushed it below the fold on plenty of commercial queries.

Then a second shift landed on top of the first. AI Overviews and assistant-style answers now resolve a good number of searches before anyone clicks anything at all, paid or organic.

The practical response hasn't changed much. Own the queries where a click is worth paying for, earn the ones where it isn't, and structure your content well enough to be the source an AI answer quotes. Ranking is no longer the whole goal. Being cited is.
