Take a Stroll Through Internet Design History

The aesthetics of the Internet have changed quite dramatically over the past 20 years, and sometimes it is easy to forget just how much so. Berlin, Germany based designer, Fabian Burghardt crafted a pretty amazing website that shows just how far we have evolved on the web.

Why this matters beyond the nostalgia

It's easy to laugh at visitor counters and tiled backgrounds. The more useful read is that every era of web design was solving for the constraint in front of it. Table layouts existed because CSS couldn't be trusted. Flash existed because HTML couldn't animate. Heavy drop shadows and glossy buttons existed because people needed to be told what was clickable.

The constraints changed and the answers changed with them. Mobile traffic forced responsive layouts. Slow connections forced performance budgets. Accessibility requirements forced real semantic structure instead of decorative markup.

The current constraint is that a growing share of people never see your page at all. They ask an assistant and read a summary. That rewards clear structure, honest headings, and content that answers a question directly, which is a very different brief than the one that produced the animated flame GIF.
