How to Track AI Traffic in GA4
AI tools are sending traffic to your website.
The question isn’t if. It’s how much… and what happens next?
The easiest way to find out is by building an Exploration in GA4. We like this approach because it shows:
-
Which AI platforms are sending traffic
-
Which pages they’re sending visitors to
-
What those visitors do once they arrive
In other words… not just traffic. Behavior.

How to Build the Report
-
Create a new Exploration and name it something like “Traffic from AI.”
-
Create a segment called “AI Traffic.”
-
Under Add new condition, choose Page referrer.
-
Click + Add filter, choose matches regex, and paste in the following:
^https:\/\/(www\.meta\.ai|www\.perplexity\.ai|chat\.openai\.com|claude\.ai|chat\.mistral\.ai|gemini\.google\.com|chatgpt\.com|copilot\.microsoft\.com|copy\.ai|chat\.deepseek\.com|www\.deepseek\.com)(\/.*)?$|.*\.ai.*|.*\.openai.*|.*\.groq.*|.*\.metaai.*|.*\.meta\.com/ai.*|.*\.deepseek.*
Set Your Report View
For Dimensions, choose:
-
Page referrer
-
Landing page + query string
For Metrics, choose:
-
Sessions
-
Engagement rate
-
Session key event rate
That’s it.
You’ll now see AI-driven traffic in a clean table view, including engagement and conversion performance.
